Antigen Detection Test

An antigen detection test identifies specific proteins, known as antigens, present on the surface of a virus or bacteria. Unlike polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, which detect the genetic material of a pathogen, antigen tests focus on recognizing proteins that elicit an immune response. These tests are commonly used for respiratory viruses, including influenza and COVID-19, as well as other infectious diseases.
